The next Beta version of Longhorn server is set to launch “soon,” but the final product will not be released before the fall of 2007.
In his speech at the Microsoft Management Summit 2006, Bob Muglia, Senior Vice President of Server and Tools at Microsoft, informed attendees that the major Windows server upgrade, codenamed Longhorn and informally known as Vista server, is expected to ship in the latter half of 2007.
Microsoft has stated that they will ship this operating system in 2007, but they had not previously provided this guidance. Muglia noted that there is hope for Microsoft to release the next “nearly complete” beta version in the near future, with a major server beta expected this fall that will incorporate all the necessary changes from the Vista operating system designed for clients.
The Vista Beta 2 for clients, also referred to as the Customer Technology Preview (CTP), is anticipated to be available by the end of Q2, with the final enterprise product expected this fall and the customer version set for early 2007.
