Following the groundbreaking event where a technician installed the Windows XP operating system on Macintosh hardware, open-source users may find themselves even more surprised by Microsoft’s new Virtual Server 2005 RC2, which now supports Linux operating systems and is available for free download.
With the upcoming wave of Windows Server “Longhorn,” virtualization technology is set to become an integral part of the Windows environment through Windows Hypervisor technology, allowing users to run an unlimited number of virtual operating systems on a single physical server.
Virtual Server 2005 RC2 supports versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1, 3.0, and 4; Red Hat Linux 7.3 and 9.0; as well as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0, SUSE Linux 9.2, 9.3, and 10.0. Users of the older Virtual Server 2003 RC2 can download Virtual Machine Additions for Linux from the Microsoft Connect website (http://www.connect.microsoft.com/) to enhance their Linux support.
