A periodic comet known as 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann is set to make a “journey” close to Earth in mid-May, and residents of the Blue Planet will be able to see it with the naked eye, according to a Chinese scientist.
Wang Sichao, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated that the largest part of comet 73P, which resembles a Chinese dandelion, is expected to be about 10 million kilometers away from Earth on May 12.
This comet was discovered by scientists A. Schwassmann and A. A. Wachmann at the Hamburg Observatory in Germany on May 2, 1930, and it split into three fragments during its most recent pass in 1995.
Scientist Wang noted that the latest astronomical observations indicate that 73P has now split into 40 fragments and will pass across Earth’s sky in the form of a pearl necklace in mid-May.
