Men who consume calcium-rich foods and dairy products may significantly reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer, researchers recently reported.
In the American journal Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Susanna C. Larsson from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and her colleagues noted that recent studies indicate an “inverse relationship between calcium intake and the risk of colorectal cancer.”
They conducted research on the relationship between calcium intake and the risk of colorectal cancer among 45,306 Swedish men aged 45 to 79 who had no prior history of cancer.
Over a follow-up period of 6.7 years, a total of 449 individuals were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The researchers found that the risk of disease among those with the highest calcium consumption was 32% lower compared to those with the lowest calcium intake. Additionally, consuming more dairy products also contributed to a decreased risk of this illness.
