A Greek fisherman has made an extraordinary catch, bringing up a bronze statue of a horse rider and a two-handled vessel, treasures from ancient Greece that have been preserved for two millennia in the Aegean Sea.
The catch, discovered by the man off the coast of Kalymnos Island last week, has been handed over to archaeological experts in Greece. It is part of an international program for the restoration and preservation of antiquities, which often rewards those who discover and return artifacts with a payment of 10% of the object’s value.
The find includes a nearly intact two-handled vessel and fragments of a bronze statue, the largest piece being a 95 cm fragment of the horse rider’s upper body. These artifacts date back to the Hellenistic period of ancient Greece, which began during the reign of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC and lasted for three centuries.
A Kalymnos fisherman also made a priceless catch in 1994 when he discovered a bronze statue known as “The Lady of Kalymnos“.
