Motorola will provide a complete experimental system including access points, access networks, and samples of mobile WiMax handheld devices for this project.
The initial plan for the WiMax deployment in Tokyo is set to last for 5 months, starting from September, and will enable Softbank Group to utilize wireless broadband technologies.
Motorola will deploy 5 WiMax access points and 25 sample mobile handheld devices operating in the 2.5GHz frequency band. The trial project will also evaluate the MIMO capabilities of the WiMax solutions provided by Motorola in supporting “multi-antenna” communication systems, as well as enabling the transmission of larger data amounts over longer distances.
Softbank Group is currently a provider of mobile connectivity, fixed communication, and fixed broadband services. The company acquired Vodafone K.K., Japan’s third-largest mobile service operator, in April 2006 for $15.3 billion. Currently, Softbank Group has 26 million customers using mobile and fixed services in Japan.
