Can an iPod make you happy, sad, or even bring you to tears? That possibility may soon become a reality.
Apple Computer has recently filed a patent application for a music device capable of influencing the mood and behavior of its users.
Registered under the number 200060107822, this device affects your mood and behavior in two primary ways. First, it can select music that best matches the activity you are currently engaged in (for example, a dance track for a rhythmic workout, which can enhance the excitement for the listener).
Alternatively, it has the ability to speed up or slow down the tempo of a song, transforming a melody into something soothing and gentle or vibrant and energetic.
However, the Inquirer website expresses skepticism about the practicality of this second option. “After all, who wants to listen to a song played at double speed with vocals sounding like two chipmunks? Just because you’re out for a run?”
According to the patent application, “the music emitted is closely tied to the heartbeat. Therefore, it will speed up or slow down in accordance with your heart rate.
“Unfortunately, if it stops altogether, you might need to quickly grab a defibrillator (anyone who has seen Mission: Impossible 3 will remember this device well). On the other hand, if it is constantly racing like a horse, you may need to reassess your health status“, the Inquirer comments.
