California’s San Bernardino County has recently implemented a GPS (Global Positioning System) gang tracking system to enhance security in the area.
The suburban region of San Bernardino, California, has become the first location to utilize satellite-based crime tracking technology. Six other counties in California are also employing GPS to monitor individuals with previous convictions for sexual offenses, enabling law enforcement to respond swiftly when these offenders have “issues.”
According to an agreement reached between prison officials and the San Bernardino government, dangerous individuals upon their release will be required to wear a GPS ankle bracelet to allow for constant tracking.
When these individuals enter “sensitive” areas (typically high-crime zones, or areas beyond their allowed range), the device will send an alert signal to a monitoring center operated by law enforcement agencies.
The University of California will be responsible for evaluating the results of this pilot program to identify any shortcomings that need to be addressed.
