Following the conclusion of the game development competition – VietGames on May 29, discussions erupted on various tech forums in Vietnam regarding the game Chaos Age, developed by the FPT Technology Development Center, which won the award for “Best Vietnamese Game of 2006.” Critics have labeled it as a “high-tech imitation” that allegedly uses source code from several foreign games such as Quake3 Arena (a famous game by id Software released in 2000) and World of Warcraft.
VietGames 2006 was a game development competition and award voting initiative in the electronic entertainment sector organized by the Vietnam Software Association (Vinasa).
When submitting their competition application, did the game development team clearly state the origins of the code snippets they utilized, including the licenses for the open-source code? Whether the competition’s criteria accept this form of “localization” is a matter that the organizers need to clarify soon to dispel suspicions of a second “iCMS” incident.
