Not a cactus, nor a banana flower, this is a strange plant known as “Tuo Yang,” which thrives in harsh desert regions. It belongs to the only plant genus in the Sun Mushroom family, but it is not a true mushroom.
Absence of chlorophyll gives it a distinctive brownish-red color instead of the usual green. However, this vibrant hue makes it easier to locate in the desert.
Tuo Yang is a product that brings significant economic value.
The parasitic roots attach to Tuo Yang buds, which are nearly spherical in shape. They gradually become round or cylindrical, eventually developing some fibrous roots and backward scale-like leaves.
This “strange fruit” typically grows taller than 15 cm, with some exceptional specimens reaching up to 100 cm. Most of its body will be buried in the sand.
Flowering occurs from May to July, with flowers measuring 3-6 mm in length and relatively short filaments. The fruiting period runs from June to July, producing tiny, nearly spherical or oval fruits that are only 1 mm long and have a diameter of 0.4-1 mm. The outer skin is white, while the seeds are dark red and round.
Interestingly, despite its rough and unattractive appearance, Tuo Yang is a product that brings significant economic value. In China, 1 kg of Tuo Yang can sell for over 40 Yuan, equivalent to more than 130,000 VND/kg. Additionally, it can also be found in several Central Asian and Southwest Asian countries.
Harvesters of Tuo Yang often use it as a medicinal herb. According to the ancient Chinese encyclopedia of medicinal herbs, only the flower stalk needs to be removed for it to be used medicinally. Moreover, its stalk is rich in tannins, which can be extracted for various uses. Tuo Yang can also be used in alcohol production, highlighting its undeniable value. Furthermore, Tuo Yang is relatively scarce compared to market demand, making it difficult for everyone to find and purchase.
In Vietnam, there is also a species of Tuo Yang that typically grows on the roots of large trees in damp, deep forests. They are commonly found in Ha Giang, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, and other regions. This type can also be used for medicinal purposes.
