Conservation staff in China were astonished when they spotted a strange creature resembling the mythical Pegasus from Greek mythology, but in black.
Upon reviewing the infrared camera data, staff at the Bingfeng Management Station in the Du Ha Yuan National Nature Reserve, located in the Zhushan District of Shijiazhuang city, Hebei Province, China, were pleasantly surprised to discover a special creature that closely resembled the Pegasus from Greek mythology, particularly with its sharp horns protruding from its forehead straight up into the sky. Unlike Pegasus, however, this creature had two horns and its fur was black.
In the images captured by the camera, this black Pegasus-like creature was curiously staring into the lens with its large, dark eyes, its adorable and playful demeanor seemingly asking, “What is this?” All the images were clear and vivid.
Curious black creature looking directly at the camera.
The conservation staff were both surprised and delighted while watching the images and videos of this black creature, as it is an extremely rare wild animal.
According to biologists, this peculiar creature is known as the Continental Goat (or Chinese Goat), which is very rare and classified as a level 2 protected wild animal. It has a body resembling a horse, a head like a sheep, hooves similar to a cow, and a tail like that of a donkey. They were once found in southern China and the Indochinese Peninsula, living in rocky mountainous regions, primarily in limestone mountains at altitudes ranging from 50 to 2,000 meters.
Due to habitat loss, this species has become increasingly rare and is strictly protected. Because the Chinese goat has a unique appearance that seems like a hybrid of various species, it is often referred to as the black Pegasus, named after the mythical creature.
In Greek mythology, Pegasus is a winged horse resembling an eagle, with pure white fur and a single sharp horn growing from its forehead. It is the offspring of the sea god Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa. |
