Famous for being called the “Sleeping Valley,” the residents of this village can simultaneously fall asleep for many consecutive days, a phenomenon even doctors cannot fully understand.
The Sleeping Village
“Sleeping Valley”, the name of a remote village in Kalachi, located in northern Kazakhstan, has caused its residents to suffer from a mysterious illness, where everyone falls into a state of drowsiness and can sleep for many consecutive days.
Many people have been forced to leave the village to start a new life with a clear mind.
Some doctors have examined the health of the villagers and discovered that liquid gas is excessively accumulated in their brains, leading to neurological disturbances. However, the source of this gas remains a mystery.
The eerie village is often deserted as most residents are trapped in prolonged drowsiness.
The hauntingly desolate landscape of “Sleeping Valley.”
It took scientists four years to uncover the reason behind this phenomenon.
The cause of drowsiness in this village is known to be radon gas, which accumulates from the nearby uranium mine from the Soviet era. Although the radiation levels from the mine are no longer hazardous, they still produce a colorless, odorless gas, radon, causing people to feel drowsy and eventually fall asleep.
Residents can still hear the voices of those around them but are unable to open their eyes or respond.
Prolonged sleep day after day is not something the villagers desire. However, they cannot control their sleep and often doze off while doing anything. Some people sleep for so long that their relatives think they are in a coma and take them to the hospital. But upon examination, they show no signs of illness and are simply asleep.
After waking up, many experience temporary memory loss, unable to recall events that occurred prior to their sleep. The sudden onset of drowsiness and the resulting stupor pose significant challenges for the residents in their daily lives.
The cause identified as radon gas, which originates from the nearby mine.
Not only do memory issues arise, but those who sleep for extended periods, such as 3-4 days or even a week, also experience hallucinations, headaches, fatigue, and increased libido in adults.
Drowsiness can strike residents of all ages, even affecting animals like dogs and cats.
Some villagers believe they are victims of… aliens or are part of the government’s “horrific” experiments.
Lyubov Belkova, a 60-year-old woman, is considered the first resident to suffer from this strange illness since April 2010. Since then, she has experienced seven relapses without clear explanation.

It took four years for scientists to uncover the true cause, discovering the excessive buildup of liquid gas in the brains of the residents.
Initially, Belkova was diagnosed with a stroke due to ischemia, but shortly after, many villagers began experiencing similar symptoms, and drowsiness quickly became a “common illness” for the entire village.
Currently, the local government is considering plans to relocate the residents, removing all inhabitants from the village as the root cause of the radon gas cannot be resolved.
