If you are experiencing persistent hiccups accompanied by difficulty swallowing and weight loss, think immediately of esophageal cancer.
This is the advice from Professor T. Walsh from a hospital in the Republic of Ireland. He notes that an increasing number of esophageal cancer patients are experiencing continuous hiccups.
Typically, esophageal cancer patients arrive at the hospital quite late: about three months after the first symptoms appear, significantly reducing the effectiveness of treatment.
This is a dangerous disease that takes more lives than traffic accidents when statistics are considered in the Republic of Ireland. Smoking and drinking alcohol can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.
