Eric Schmidt, the CEO of the world’s largest online search service, has declared that 300 years is sufficient time to classify and organize all global data into an easily accessible repository.
Speaking at the annual conference of the American Advertising Association in Phoenix, Schmidt stated: “We tried to do some calculations to see how long it would take to complete that task, and the answer is about 300 years. Of course, that is quite a long time.”
The Google leader estimated that out of a total of 5 million terabytes (1 terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes) of data in the world today, only about 170 terabytes have been indexed for search purposes. However, Schmidt’s statement did not clarify whether the amount of information mentioned refers to the current total data or includes the vast amount of information that will arise from now until the year 2310.
