The U.S. space agency NASA has confirmed that a 450 kg meteorite, measuring 60 cm in length, fell in McAllen, Texas.
“Although meteorites tend to enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, they slow down while moving through the atmosphere, breaking into smaller pieces before landing. Meteorites cool quickly and are generally not a danger to the public,” NASA stated in a release.

The statement also urged that if a piece of the meteorite is found, it should be studied.
According to NASA, the meteorite observed in the sky over McAllen serves as a reminder for NASA and other organizations to enhance research to better understand and protect our Earth.
“In addition, combining scientific and technical expertise will drive human space exploration, enhance understanding of the solar system, and promote successful space missions by minimizing risks,” the statement read.
Local media reported that the meteorite’s fall caused windows in nearby homes to shake.
Additionally, satellites from the National Weather Service also detected the movement of this meteorite.
It is believed that approximately 5 to 6 tons of meteorites fall to Earth every day. Most meteorites found weigh from a few grams to several tens of tons. The majority of these meteorites fall into the ocean.
