The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced the mobilization of a volunteer army to search for “ultrafine” stardust present in cosmic dust samples collected by the Stardust spacecraft from Comet Wild 2.
According to the plan, the Stardust spacecraft is set to land on Earth this Sunday after a seven-year journey covering a distance of 4.5 billion kilometers through space.
Starting mid-March, scientists will upload images of the cosmic dust samples stored in Stardust’s equipment to the Internet. Volunteers will have 30,000 hours to use a virtual microscope on a NASA website to search for these tiny stardust particles.
The names of the discoverers will be assigned to these rare types of stardust. The dust will then be analyzed for research purposes.
