Doctors in the UK recommend that individuals with a runny nose should avoid using antibiotics, as the condition will resolve on its own.
A research team at the University of Auckland reviewed seven studies regarding the use of antibiotics for treating a green runny nose, which is a common symptom of a cold. They found that antibiotics were only beneficial for 1 out of 7 individuals, as the illness typically resolves on its own.
Author Bruce Arroll stated: “Some experts often prescribe antibiotics for cases of respiratory infections and purulent nasal discharge. While the medication may be effective, it can cause long-term harm, and most patients recover without the need for medication.”
“Antibiotics should only be used when symptoms persist for too long,” Arroll added.
The research found that antibiotics often have side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Experts advise that the best approach is to blow your nose regularly to eliminate the virus. Overusing antibiotics increases the risk of developing drug resistance.
