This area is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful deserts. From March to September, during the rainy season, thousands of sparkling turquoise lakes fill with water, hidden beneath the massive sand dunes, creating a surreal landscape.
The park’s spectacular scenery is the result of sediments brought to the Atlantic Ocean by the Parnaíba and Preguiças Rivers, which are then blown back inland by strong winds. The enormous rainfall combined with the flat terrain and an impermeable rock layer beneath the sand prevents drainage, resulting in vibrant blue lagoons nestled among the fine white dunes.

The name “Lençóis” in Portuguese translates to “bed sheets.” This name is fitting when viewed from above, as the landscape resembles beautifully spread sheets on the world’s most magnificent waterbed.
Despite its stunning scenery, the climate in Lençóis Maranhenses can be quite harsh. The sand dunes are formed by strong winds blowing in from the ocean during October and November, at which time the blue lakes gradually disappear.
Each year, more than 100,000 visitors are attracted to this unique destination. Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is also chosen as a filming location due to its impressive and surreal beauty.
