China is developing a new electricity generation method from coalbed methane, with a current total capacity of 90,000 kW. According to experts, coalbed methane is part of clean energy and a promising source of electricity generation in the near future.
Liu Wenge, Vice President of the Coalbed Methane Information Center under the China Coal Information Institute, stated that with the advancement of science and technology, coalbed methane has become a new electricity generation source in China. Experts indicate that besides the current 90,000 kW electricity generation project, several other projects with a capacity of 150,000 kW are also being planned to prepare for operational launch.
Currently, a coalbed methane power plant with a capacity of 120,000 kW is under construction in Shanxi Province in northern China, which will become the world’s largest power plant of its kind upon completion.
Liu noted that the main equipment China is using for coalbed methane electricity generation includes combustion steam turbines and internal combustion engines, which can be easily converted from existing coal-fired power plants into coalbed methane power plants. Liu also emphasized that coalbed methane is a component of clean energy and holds great promise as a future electricity generation source.
