In order to access advanced cardiovascular treatment methods from around the world and to better meet the healthcare needs of patients, a seminar on the transfer of interventional catheterization techniques and minimally invasive cardiac surgery was held on April 19 at An Sinh Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. This event featured collaboration between professors from the Hawaii Cardiovascular Institute (USA) and Vietnamese cardiovascular specialists.
During the seminar, U.S. cardiovascular professors transferred techniques for interventional catheterization and minimally invasive cardiac surgery to Vietnamese doctors. These are the latest techniques for treating congenital heart diseases and acquired heart conditions, widely used in the U.S. and globally. The advantages of these methods include simpler surgeries, early recovery times, and fewer long-term complications compared to traditional surgical procedures.
It is expected that following this technology transfer, coronary artery bypass surgeries will be replaced by minimally invasive surgeries, including robot-assisted surgeries, which will also be transferred by the Hawaii Cardiovascular Institute to Vietnamese doctors at the end of this year.
According to healthcare experts, cardiovascular diseases currently represent the leading cause of death in Vietnam, with a rate exceeding 40%. Previously, most congenital heart diseases required open-heart surgery, which involved complex equipment and long recovery times. With this new method, it is certain that diagnosis and treatment will become increasingly effective.
