Out of 20 million children in the United States being treated for ear infections, most cases are mild, but complications can lead to hearing loss.
Roman Prymula and researchers from the University of Defense of the Czech Republic examined nearly 5,000 children in the country. Half of the children were given the new vaccine when they were 3, 4, 5, and 12-15 months old. The other children received a completely unrelated vaccine, which was the Hepatitis A vaccine.
All the children were monitored until they were 24-27 months old. The group that received the experimental vaccine experienced fewer cases of otitis media (333 cases of infection, compared to 499 cases among children who did not receive the experimental vaccine).
This study was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of the vaccine.
