Skype Technologies has recently upgraded its proprietary Internet calling software to address a serious security vulnerability.
According to the software developers, this security flaw could “open the door” to sensitive information on affected systems for malicious attackers.
Hackers could exploit this vulnerability by creating a hyperlink sent through Skype. When users click on this link, a file from the victim’s system could be transmitted to another computer with Skype installed.
The security company Secunia has classified this vulnerability as medium severity. According to this company, hackers could take advantage of this flaw to bypass certain security restrictions on the victim’s system and steal sensitive information.
Last Wednesday, Skype officially released version 2.5.0.82, which includes a patch for this security vulnerability.
