According to research conducted by the cybersecurity organization Cybertrust, hackers are currently trending towards executing smaller scale attacks rather than large-scale operations aimed at crippling entire systems.
The experts at Cybertrust carried out a study on the infection rates of the Zotob worm across 700 companies. The findings indicated that 13% of these companies reported being “only slightly affected.” Additionally, 6% confirmed they experienced a medium level of impact, with damages estimated around $10,000.
This is certainly a positive sign when compared to the statistics from previous “surges” of virus attacks. More than 60% of companies suffered “medium or severe” damage due to the Nimda worm. The Blaster worm caused less widespread destruction but still inflicted significant losses on over 30% of businesses.
“The study does not conclude that the threat from viruses is diminishing. In reality, it has been proven that administrators always pay a heavy price for moments of negligence,” commented Russ Cooper, a cybersecurity expert from Cybertrust.
