Millions of years ago, humanity believed that Earth was the center of the universe, with celestial bodies like stars, the moon, and the sun revolving around it. This notion filled people with immense pride!
However, after a long period of observation, Nicolas Copernicus concluded the opposite: Earth is not the center of the universe; rather, it revolves around an axis. Copernicus himself was astonished by his findings, repeatedly observing, reasoning, and refining his views over many years, ultimately compiling them into a book “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres”.
Though the book was completed, Copernicus hesitated to publish it due to its significant implications. It was only in his later years, with encouragement from friends, that he decided to share his life’s work with the public.
Due to declining health, Copernicus entrusted his student, Andreas Osiander, with the task of publishing the book. Tragically, the man who gazed into the depths of the universe was unaware of the future fate of his work.
Initially, Osiander tirelessly sought out publishers, facing numerous challenges to ensure that his teacher’s book would be published. However, days turned into weeks with no glimmer of hope.
Osiander grew increasingly anxious. One day, he encountered a well-dressed, prominent German publisher who spoke highly of Copernicus’s theories and expressed admiration for him. Osiander, feeling moved, decided to entrust the publication of his teacher’s work to this man. It seemed that the weight on Osiander’s heart had lifted, and the matter was settled.
Little did he know, this person revealed his true nature as soon as he held Copernicus’s work. By then, Osiander had moved to another city for work, unaware of the betrayal.
This individual admitted that his admiration for Copernicus was entirely feigned, merely a ruse to deceive the honest and trusting Osiander. He had never supported Copernicus’s theories and even publicly criticized them. He manipulated and distorted Copernicus’s work, completely altering the heartfelt text written by the great scientist. To further mislead readers, he even changed the preface that Copernicus had written for the book. He claimed that the theory: “The Sun-Centered Universe” was merely a hypothesis of Copernicus, which amounted to a devastating act of sabotage against this monumental work.
Meanwhile, Osiander remained oblivious, believing that his teacher’s work had been published intact. It was only when he returned from school that he discovered the published work had been entirely altered. Osiander was stunned and filled with regret: “I have failed my teacher; his lifelong dedication has been reduced to this! Can I remain silent while they do this? No, never!”

Osiander rushed around, wanting to punish the traitor and restore the true face of the work “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres”, but due to the opposition from Copernicus’s enemies, all his efforts were in vain.
At this time, Copernicus was bedridden. A great scientist nearing 70, with a life full of turmoil, was resigned to his fate.
Not long after, Copernicus passed away, leaving behind a sense of regret. Even in his dying moments, he did not hold the newly published version of his work. If Copernicus had seen his lifelong effort completely distorted, it would have broken his heart; he surely would have died with his eyes wide open.
But such is life; the truth always prevails!
At the end of the 17th century, the original manuscript of Copernicus’s work was discovered in a library in Bohemia. In 1873, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Copernicus’s birth, the Warsaw publisher in Poland published the original text of Copernicus, removing all distortions. It was only then that Copernicus’s work “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres” was officially introduced to the world in its true form.
