On December 10th, the Nobel Prize ceremony was held in Stockholm, Sweden. Ten scientists and economists received this prestigious award for their contributions.
The ceremony was marked by the absence of British playwright Harold Pinter, the recipient of this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature, due to health issues. His award, which includes a prize of $1.3 million, a gold medal, and a Nobel Prize certificate, was presented to his representative.
The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to American scientists Roy Glauber and John Hall, along with German scientist Theodor Haensch. All three were honored for their work in “developing quantum theory and significantly contributing to the advancement of the optical spectrum.”
American scientists Robert H. Grubbs and Richard R. Schrock, along with French scientist Yves Chauvin, received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Their discoveries have enabled the chemical industry to produce more effective pharmaceuticals and plastics with less toxic waste.
This year’s Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Robert J. Aumann, an Israeli-American, and Thomas C. Schelling, an American. This duo received the prize for “enhancing our understanding of cooperation and conflict through game theory analysis.”
The Nobel Prize in Medicine for 2005 was awarded to Australian scientists Robin Warren and Barry Marshall for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which causes stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal issues.
Approximately 2,000 guests, including the Swedish royal family, attended the award ceremony.
On the same day, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its director Mohamed El Baradei received the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 in a ceremony held in Oslo, Norway.
The Nobel Prizes are announced in October and awarded each year on December 10th, commemorating the death of Alfred Nobel, the industrialist and founder of the awards.
The Nobel Prize is the most prestigious award in the fields of science and literature, established in 1901. The prize for laureates includes $1.3 million, a gold medal, and a Nobel Prize certificate.
