The longest heatwave in Northern Vietnam since the beginning of the year will continue until the end of next week, when thunderstorms help to cool down the temperatures.
Northern Vietnam is currently experiencing a widespread and prolonged heatwave, influenced by the warm low pressure system from the west.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that the heat will persist in Northern Vietnam next week as the warm low pressure system and foehn winds remain dominant. The highest daily temperatures in the northern region are expected to range from 35-38 degrees Celsius, with some areas in the plains, Hoa Binh, and Hanoi reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius at times.

The American website Accuweather forecasts that next Wednesday (July 12), Hanoi will record temperatures between 29-39 degrees Celsius, with the remaining days ranging from 27-38 degrees Celsius. At altitudes above 1,500 meters, such as in Sa Pa (Lao Cai), temperatures will fluctuate between 19-26 degrees Celsius during the week.
Central Vietnam is also experiencing a series of intense hot days. Meteorological agencies predict that next week, temperatures in the region from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa will reach highs of 36-39 degrees Celsius, with many mountainous areas exceeding 39 degrees Celsius.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Weather Forecasting Department, stated that the heatwave in Northern and Central Vietnam is likely to last until the end of next week. Toward the end of the week, weather patterns that cause rain may form, at which point the heat will finally cease in these two regions.
Southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands will experience sunny days with occasional showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, but widespread rain is not yet expected. By the end of next week, the southwest monsoon is expected to strengthen, increasing the likelihood of rain and thunderstorms in both regions.
The average temperature for July 2023 across the country is about 0.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of previous years. Specifically, the Northern region and the North and Central Coast are higher by 0.5-1 degrees Celsius.
