Snakes are among the most adaptable animals, capable of thriving in various environments. For this reason, the abilities of this species should not be underestimated.
Long before smartphones became popular, people often used button phones. One of the most beloved games during that time was Snake. In this game, players had to maneuver the snake in different directions by moving it at right angles.
The video below captures a rare moment of a real snake moving at right angles in a similar fashion. The reason for this unusual movement is that it is struggling to… climb up sheer walls.
The video was filmed in Kennesaw, Georgia. The main character in the video is a large rat snake. This species belongs to the genus Pantherophis and is found throughout the northeastern United States. They are considered expert “climbers,” capable of scaling vertical walls to search for food in residential areas.
While snakes are commonly known for their ability to climb trees, conquering simple brick walls like this showcases the rat snake’s skills at a different level, especially since they lack limbs (arms or legs) or claws to assist in climbing.
All they rely on is 100% of their muscular strength. Of course, the grooves, crevices, and contact points between the bricks are also utilized by the rat snake while climbing the wall, but this advantage is minimal.
