The Year 1889
Eiffel Tower.
The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 and was expected to become the “highlight of the World’s Fair.” The tower stands at 300 meters tall, reaching 324 meters when including the antenna on top.
The famous painting The Starry Night by Dutch master Vincent van Gogh was created in 1889. The artwork depicts the view from his hospital room in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, southern France, at night. Additionally, 1889 marks the birth year of German fascist leader Adolf Hitler.
The Year 1963
Former President John F. Kennedy
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, while traveling in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, USA.
On the same day, author Aldous Huxley passed away at the age of 69 in Los Angeles, California. He was known for his science fiction novels such as Brave New World and The Doors of Perception.
The Year 1977
Guillotine.
The year 1977 marked the last public use of the guillotine in France. Hamida Djandoubi was executed by guillotine on September 10, 1977.
This year also saw the launch of “Star Wars.” The first film in the iconic series directed by George Lucas premiered on May 25, 1977.
The Year 1912
Titanic.
The sinking of the Titanic was a maritime disaster that occurred at midnight on April 14, 1912, extending into the early hours of April 15, 1912. This incident is considered one of the most serious disasters in world history.
This year also saw Polish biochemist Kazimierz Funk recognized as one of the first to formulate the concept of vitamins.
The Year 1863
London Underground.
The first line of the world’s oldest underground railway system, the London Underground, was inaugurated on January 10, 1863.
On January 1, 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln officially issued the Emancipation Proclamation, calling for the federal army to liberate all slaves in the rebellious states. Approximately 3 million slaves were declared permanently free.
