A Sustainable Approach to Environmental Balance: Utilizing Crassostrea rhizophorae in Aquaculture
One effective way to address environmental balance and optimize nutrient utilization in shrimp farming areas is through the use of substrate panels for cultivating the oyster species Crassostrea rhizophorae.
In the Philippines, under the Mangrove Friendly Aquaculture Program, the bivalve species Sonneratia sp. is cultivated to mitigate harmful environmental effects associated with shrimp farming. Brazilian researchers have introduced the cultivation of Crassostrea rhizophorae on substrate panels placed at the openings of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) ponds.
Each panel hosts 500 oysters, arranged closely together like bed sheets. The results show that these oysters absorbed a significant amount of nitrogen and phosphorus. After five months, the oysters reached a length of 3.3 cm and a width of 2.16 cm. The integration of oyster farming with shrimp cultivation has effectively utilized idle labor, providing supplemental income that has improved the livelihoods of the community.
