Seagate Technology, an American company, has introduced a groundbreaking method known as perpendicular recording for its portable hard drive, the Momentus 2.5-inch, 5400 RPM, USB 2.0, with a capacity of 160 GB.
This innovative technology records data bits vertically, allowing for a 30% increase in storage capacity compared to existing hard drives on the market, which typically have a maximum capacity of 120 GB and utilize horizontal recording methods.
The new Seagate product is compact, weighing less than 0.5 kg, and supports data transfer speeds of up to 480 Mb/s.
Seagate also unveiled a 500 GB, 3.5-inch version for external SATA hard drives. This product line employs horizontal recording technology and features a SATA interface with speeds of 3 Gb/s. Theoretically, if Seagate transitions to perpendicular recording for this model, the storage capacity could increase to 650 GB.
The 160 GB external hard drive is set to hit the market in February at a retail price of $379, while the SATA PushButton 500 GB model is anticipated to launch in April, with the price yet to be announced.
