Huacachina Oasis in Peru (Huacachina) is dubbed the most beautiful oasis in South America, nestled within the depths of a desolate desert.
The World’s Most Isolated Oasis
In Ica Province, Peru, there is a magical town located in one of the driest regions on Earth. The oasis town of Huacachina lies hidden beneath the vastness of the Atacama Desert, approximately 300 kilometers south of Peru’s capital, Lima.

At its center is a natural lagoon, surrounded by various palm trees, eucalyptus, and architectural structures. The town, which is encircled by towering sand dunes rising dozens of meters, is home to just 96 families living around the central lagoon. Despite being situated in the desert, the temperature here remains a pleasant 25 to 30 degrees Celsius year-round.
News of this green oasis in the heart of the desert began to spread in the 1940s when a spa for the wealthy claimed that the lagoon’s waters could cure ailments. However, by the 1950s, Huacachina faded into obscurity and remained abandoned for decades.

The Atacama Desert, located in the central region of South America’s western coast, is one of the driest areas in the world and resembles the natural environment closest to Mars on Earth. Water is scarce in the desert, with no rainfall throughout the year. From the top of the sand dunes, one cannot see any water sources or rivers; so where does the water in Huacachina come from?
The water in the lagoon comes from rivers flowing through Ica Province.
This oasis was formed thanks to an underground river, which supports the growth of plants and trees amid the desert. However, the sand wall surrounding the town is gradually diminishing, contributing to increased heat during the day. Currently, authorities are making efforts to preserve the oasis and the vegetation formed by the palm trees, eucalyptus, and carob trees.
It turns out that the lagoon’s water is sourced from rivers in Ica Province. These rivers exist as underground flows, creating a freshwater lake in the desert.
As a natural oasis, Huacachina has been a favorite tourist destination for both Peruvians and foreigners for decades. In the 1960s, it was a popular summer resort frequented by the Peruvian elite with houses, hotels, walkways around the lagoon, and even a therapeutic spa…
It wasn’t until the 1990s that curious travelers flocked to explore this beautiful oasis. Tour companies began organizing off-road vehicle rides and sandboarding to attract adventure-seekers looking for experiences.
Today, Huacachina welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors who enjoy dune tours by buggy, test their skills on sandboards, and experience the wild nightlife for which Huacachina is renowned.
This is also a favorite resort for the Peruvian elite.
The Peruvian government decided to print an image of the oasis on the back of the 50 Nuevo Sol coin, first issued in 1991.
A tourist paradise in the heart of the desert.
The mysterious town of Huacachina is surrounded by a desert with harsh living conditions, extreme temperatures, dryness, and little rainfall. Conversely, during May and August, temperatures can unexpectedly drop significantly. Nevertheless, it remains a recreational and tourist destination that attracts many visitors.
Huacachina is about a 5-hour bus ride from Lima and only 45 minutes from Paracas. Although there is no public transport to Huacachina, you can hire a taxi from Ica. The Hop-on/Hop-off bus service in Peru is the easiest and best way to get around. The peak tourist season in this oasis is from June to August.

Today, visitors to Huacachina can participate in activities such as boating on the lagoon, taking off-road vehicle rides to explore the surrounding dunes at $50 per hour, sandboarding, or watching stunning sunsets over the desert. For those wanting to relax, accommodations can be rented right in the village, or camping can be done in adventurous exploration areas.
Aside from boating on the lagoon, you can sandboard and drive buggies on the dunes. When tired, you can also swim in Huacachina Lake, which is said to have “healing” properties. The lake water and sediments here are beneficial for arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, and bronchitis. It can be said that this is a tourism and relaxation paradise not only because of the mysterious existence of this oasis but also because of the prosperous and rich life of the town.

Today, the surface of the lagoon is gradually shrinking, and the mysterious, alluring beauty of this lonely oasis is no longer intact. To protect Huacachina, the Peruvian National Culture Institute has recognized it as a national cultural heritage, hoping that Huacachina will not become a “mirage” in the desert.
