Scientists excavating beneath Roman Square have uncovered a 3,000-year-old tomb, predating the founding of Rome by several hundred years.
The tomb is shaped like a deep well and contains numerous rare vases. Archaeologists believe that beneath the surface of Roman Square, a famous tourist attraction in Italy, there may lie an ancient cemetery.
“I believe that this excavation will reveal many more tombs,” said archaeologist Eugenio La Rocca.
Inside the tomb, researchers also found a vessel containing human remains. This tomb dates back to around 1,000 BC, indicating that the cemetery existed several centuries before the Romans appeared.
According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, sons of the war god Mars.
