In addition to its peer-to-peer file sharing software, the new beta version of the Opera browser is equipped with “widgets” – small web applications such as feeds (websites that support RSS) or games that can be organized within a desktop window.
This software still contains some bugs, and Opera advises users to regularly back up their data to prevent any issues. The new browser is available for free download and is compatible with most operating systems, including Windows and Mac OS. The official version of Opera 9 is expected to be released in a few months.
According to research from Net Applications, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer continues to dominate the web browser market, while Mozilla Firefox has surpassed 10% market share.
Opera currently ranks fifth, following Apple Safari and Netscape, with a market share of 0.54%.
