Microsoft Outlook 2007 will introduce entirely new features, including support for SMS text messaging and voicemail compatible with Exchange voicemail services.
In terms of interface, Outlook 2007 doesn’t differ much from previous versions, with only minor modifications. However, it adds quite a few new features such as RSS integration, and shared scheduling capabilities…
Microsoft remains somewhat secretive about the SMS support feature in the new Outlook version, as developers are still discussing partnerships with wireless service providers in the United States. During a recent demonstration of the Outlook 2007 beta, Outlook Product Manager Jessica Arnol announced that Verizon has become the first wireless service provider to support SMS functionality in Outlook.
The primary goal of Office 2007 is to enable remote workers to utilize features similar to those of the BlackBerry product line. Thanks to its integration with Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook 2007 users can browse emails, voicemails, and even share event schedules…
The SMS messaging support originated from the idea of allowing users to stay connected continuously without needing a smartphone running Office Communicator Mobile or Exchange Server. Outlook 2007 will send SMS messages to any mobile number similarly to how it sends emails. Response messages will also be received in the Outlook Inbox.
Users can send long messages, and the application will automatically break them into multiple messages according to the character limits set by service providers. Microsoft has not officially announced the pricing for this service, but it is expected to be similar to mobile service costs, with fees deducted directly from the user’s mobile service account.
