The research team at Concord Hospital (Sydney, Australia) has recently completed a trial using fish oil supplements for patients with colorectal cancer.
According to Professor Stephen Clarke, cancer produces inflammatory substances in some patients. These inflammatory agents create challenges in tolerating chemotherapy and can also lead to malnutrition.
However, Professor Clarke noted that the anti-inflammatory and nutritional value of fish oil enhances the success rate of chemotherapy. The trial showed that these patients could maintain their weight, doctors could reduce some inflammatory agents, and patients tolerated chemotherapy quite well.
Professor Clarke remarked that this discovery could be applicable to patients with various types of cancer. Nevertheless, his research team will conduct additional trials. This is a relatively new area of study, so a series of trials is necessary.
