There is a lot of information online claiming that papaya flowers can “eradicate cancer cells”. Experts analyze the compounds and proven effects of male papaya flowers.
Currently, on social media and in cancer patient groups, many people are sharing that drinking male papaya flower tea (Carica papaya) can “kill cancer cells”. As a result, male papaya flowers have become a hot commodity, with an average price ranging from 500,000 to 700,000 VND per kilogram.
Dr. Bui Pham Minh Man, from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City – Facility 3, states that there is currently no strong scientific evidence to confirm that male papaya flowers can cure cancer or effectively destroy cancer cells.
In preclinical studies, some compounds found in the papaya plant, including male papaya flowers, have been shown to inhibit the growth of certain cancer cells in laboratory conditions.
“However, these results have not been confirmed in humans, and the use of male papaya flowers as a cancer treatment remains very limited and has not been officially recognized by health organizations,” Dr. Man added.

Compounds Found in Papaya and Male Papaya Flowers
Pharmacist Truong Minh Nhat, from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City – Facility 3, mentions that the papaya plant contains many bioactive compounds such as papain enzyme, alkaloids, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Some studies suggest that these compounds may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant effects, and combat certain cancer cell types in vitro.
Among these, papain is an enzyme believed to support the immune system. “Research on papain primarily focuses on its ability to digest proteins and its anti-inflammatory effects rather than its anticancer properties,” pharmacist Nhat stated.
Some studies have reported that extracts from the leaves, seeds, and roots of the papaya plant may have effects against certain cancer cells in vitro; however, there are no in-depth studies specifically on male papaya flowers. Additionally, these studies are mainly conducted in laboratories or on animals, and results cannot be directly applied to humans.
Dr. Man indicates that male papaya flowers, which contain the enzyme papain, may aid in digestion and help alleviate indigestion symptoms. Some studies suggest that male papaya flowers have anti-inflammatory effects, which may be beneficial in treating mild inflammatory conditions.
Moreover, male papaya flowers contain flavonoids and antioxidants, which help protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals.
To date, there have been no large-scale clinical studies on humans confirming the effectiveness and safety of using male papaya flowers in cancer treatment.
“Therefore, using male papaya flowers for cancer treatment should be approached with caution, and patients should discuss with their doctor or healthcare professional before using any therapy beyond standard treatment methods,” pharmacist Nhat advised.

Important Considerations When Using Male Papaya Flowers
Dr. Man recommends that male papaya flowers can be consumed in the form of juice, decoction, or powder.
- The usual dosage is 10-15 grams of dried male papaya flowers (equivalent to about 30-50 grams of fresh flowers) to prepare daily tea.
- If used in powder form, individuals can take 5-10 grams mixed with warm water daily.
Pharmacist Nhat notes that when using male papaya flowers, people should be aware of the following issues:
- Drug interactions: Male papaya flowers may interact with certain medications, so those undergoing chronic disease treatment should consult their doctor before use.
- Allergic reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to papaya, so caution is advised when using it for the first time.
- Avoid misuse: Prolonged use of male papaya flowers without medical supervision may lead to side effects such as digestive disorders, nausea, and diarrhea.
“Male papaya flowers have some health benefits, but they should not be considered a substitute for modern cancer treatment methods. The use of male papaya flowers should be conducted in a controlled manner and under the guidance of healthcare professionals to ensure safety and effectiveness,” pharmacist Nhat cautioned.
