Three men have set a world record by folding and flying a paper airplane over a distance of more than 77 meters.
The trio that achieved this world record consists of Chee Yie Jian from Malaysia, Shin Moo Joon from South Korea, and Kim Kyu Tae from South Korea.
The paper airplane sets a record flight of over 77 meters.
In this collaboration, Chee Yie Jian designed the airplane, Shin Moo Joon folded it, and Kim Kyu Tae executed the throw to launch the paper airplane. The record-breaking flight took place in Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea.
Kim Kyu Tae made a total of 8 throws, with the longest flight reaching 77.134 meters and the shortest at 71.813 meters. This flight has set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance flown by a paper airplane.
Chee Yie Jian stated: “My design came to life thanks to Shin’s folding technique and Kim’s incredible throwing arm. It was an excellent combination that helped us achieve the record.”
In 2019, the trio known as Shin Kim Chee attempted to break the paper airplane record but fell short, missing the world record by about 6 meters. After nearly four years, they have impressed everyone by persistently pursuing their goal and turning their dream into reality.
Chee Yie Jian remarked: “The paper airplane community is small but global. People connect with each other over the internet. I’ve known Shin for nearly 10 years, and we often discuss new folding techniques and designs to fly higher and farther through social media.”
The previous record was held by a paper airplane thrown by Americans Joe Ayoob and John M. Collins, which achieved a distance of 69.14 meters on February 26, 2012.
Shin Kim Chee shared that: “We conducted a test flight about 2 months ago, achieving a distance of 78 meters. We used the highest quality 100GSM paper to create the airplane. Kim is one of the best paper airplane throwers in South Korea. I highly appreciate his powerful and stable throwing ability.”
The trio, coming from different countries, had limited opportunities for face-to-face meetings, primarily communicating through social media, yet the results they achieved are truly remarkable.
“It feels amazing that our paper airplane is now in the world record books,” Chee Yie Jian concluded.
