Robots Capable of Detecting Atomic, Chemical, and Biological Weapons to Patrol World Cup 2006 Venues in Germany
This marks the first time these robots will be used in a sports competition.
The robots, developed by a German company, will move autonomously on tracks and are similar in size to devices used by bomb disposal teams.
Equipped with CCTV cameras, the robots can detect heat-emitting objects while also identifying atomic, chemical, and biological weapons.
In collaboration with German authorities, the manufacturing company plans to deploy about eight robots at each venue a few days before every match, and they will remain in place when spectators enter the stadium.
Although organizers emphasize that they have not received any intelligence indicating a potential terrorist attack during the World Cup finals, they acknowledge that complacency is not an option in the face of the ongoing global threat of terrorism.
