The Andean mountains of Peru may hold secrets to longevity and the oldest person in the world if recent claims by government officials about a 124-year-old man born in 1900 are proven true.
The Peruvian government has declared that Marcelino Abad from the Huanuco region of central Peru is 124 years old, making him the oldest living person and potentially the oldest person ever verified.

“In the peaceful environment of Huanuco, Marcelino Abad Tolentino has maintained a healthy and calm lifestyle, evident in his good health and friendly personality. This has helped him surpass 12 decades of life, and on April 5, he just blew out 124 candles,” stated the Peruvian government.
The Peruvian authorities are assisting Mr. Abad in applying for a Guinness World Record certification for independent verification.
A spokesperson for the Guinness organization noted: “Guinness World Records receives many applications from individuals claiming to be the oldest living person. Verification of claims will involve official documentation and other evidence that a team of experts will thoroughly review to validate their achievements.”
Currently, Guinness World Records lists the oldest verified man as a 111-year-old British citizen, who received this title after the death of a Venezuelan man at age 114. The title of the oldest living woman is currently held by a 117-year-old, following the passing of her predecessor at age 122.
Mr. Abad, born in the small town of Chaglla, had no identification documents until the Peruvian government confirmed his identity in 2019, providing him with an ID card and pension.
According to a statement from the pension program Mr. Abad is enrolled in, on the occasion of his 124th birthday on April 5, he revealed that his secret to longevity lies in a diet rich in fruits and lamb. The centenarian also has a habit of chewing coca leaves, a tradition in the Andean community of Peru. Mr. Abad currently resides in a nursing home, where he was honored with a special birthday celebration.
