The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Vivitrol (also known as Naltrexone), an injectable medication for treating alcohol dependence.
Vivitrol works by blocking neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to cause the body to become dependent on alcohol, thus helping patients reduce cravings. One of the advantages of this medication is that patients only need to receive an injection once a month, whereas those using oral tablets must take them daily. However, Vivitrol can cause liver damage if used in excessive doses.
