According to a survey conducted by the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute, the Phu Quoc archipelago is home to 9 species of seagrass, covering an area of over 7,200 hectares, primarily concentrated in the waters of Ham Ninh (Phu Quoc, Kien Giang).
These vast seagrass beds on the seabed serve as the main food source for the Dugong (also known as the sea cow, mermaid, or manatee), an extremely rare species listed in the Red Book, with only about 10 individuals remaining in the southwestern waters.
The survey results also confirmed that coral reefs are mainly concentrated in the southern part of Phu Quoc Island, covering an area of approximately 362 hectares.
The Kien Giang provincial government has agreed with scientists on strategies to demarcate and strictly protect the aforementioned areas.
