In the future, people around the world will fly on plastic airplanes, according to the CEO of Boeing.
According to CEO Alan Mulally, all upcoming 737 aircraft will be made from non-metallic materials, or composites (formed from the combination of two or more different materials) as they are resistant to corrosion. These materials are currently used in many products such as tennis rackets and bicycle spokes.
Millions of travelers fly on 737 aircraft each year. The first plastic airplane is expected to take flight next year. Mulally stated that composites will be used to manufacture half of the airplane and will help reduce manufacturing and maintenance costs. The lighter composite materials are also believed to improve range and fuel efficiency.
