Astronaut Mikhail Tyurin will strike his ball with a gold-faced iron club from a special tee attached to the base of the International Space Station.
Scientists indicate that the ball will orbit the Earth for four years at a speed of 8 km/s before it falls out of orbit and burns up in the atmosphere.
American scientists are concerned that the ball could collide with satellites as it embarks on its historic journey through the realm of golf. However, Nataliya Hearn, CEO of Element 21, a golf equipment manufacturer based in Toronto sponsoring the project, asserts that there has been no opposition from NASA.
Element 21 produces golf clubs made from scandium, an alloy also used in the construction of the International Space Station. The company has paid a substantial amount to the Russian space agency to carry out this historic shot.
