In the latest issue of the Science magazine dated March 31, Dr. John Turner from the British Antarctic Survey stated that air temperatures in Antarctica have risen three times faster than the global average over the past 30 years.
According to the analysis of meteorological balloon data, the troposphere in Antarctica is not only warming up but is also experiencing the highest rate of warming compared to any other place on Earth.
The data indicates that the entire troposphere is warming during the winter months, while the stratosphere (located above the troposphere) is cooler.
The cause of this phenomenon is attributed to greenhouse gas emissions (such as CO2), which are creating a “blanket” around the Earth, trapping heat at lower altitudes, thus warming the Earth’s surface and the troposphere while cooling the stratosphere above.
Over the past 30 years, temperatures in the troposphere in Antarctica have increased by 0.5 to 0.7 degrees Celsius each decade. This is a clear sign that global warming is affecting different regions of the Earth unevenly, with Antarctica being the most significantly impacted area.
