A seminar on traditional methods for preventing avian influenza was organized by the Vietnam Red Cross Society on December 15 in Hanoi.
These methods have been effectively applied by the Vietnamese people for hundreds of years in combating diseases. The remedies are easily accessible and closely related to daily life.
Ingredients such as onions, garlic, star anise, cinnamon, and ginger are incorporated into valuable remedies.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thu Thuy, Head of Health Care at the Vietnam Red Cross Society, alongside scientific measures for disinfecting poultry farms using substances like 2-3% sodium hydroxide or 2-3% formaldehyde, residents can use a mixture of lime water, soot, and crushed neem leaves.

In particular, poultry waste and leftover food must be cleaned up, sprinkled with lime powder and poultry manure, and then buried. To boost the resistance of poultry, it is essential to provide them with 10% garlic water or a mixture of crushed stems, leaves, or papaya fruit blended with water for drinking.
At the seminar, many epidemiology experts shared their experiences in managing healthy poultry in epidemic areas by using 1 kg of salt for every 2 kg of healthy poultry. After three months, this can be boiled down to make chicken or duck fish sauce for consumption. For poultry eggs, use 1 kg of salt for 15 eggs, which can be safely used after three months.
The most effective preventive measure against influenza for humans is to keep warm, ensure adequate nutrition, and consume foods that clear the respiratory tract such as chili, garlic, star anise, cinnamon, and ginger; as well as a high intake of green vegetables. Additionally, people should drink garlic mixed with honey (blend minced garlic with honey and consume it with cooled boiled water), use garlic water (extract juice from minced garlic) for nasal drops and gargling, and use dried fruit or vinegar steam twice daily, in the morning and afternoon. It is also crucial to wear gloves and masks when handling poultry.
