After a long period of research, a farmer in Ward 3 of Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province, has successfully propagated various types of gerbera daisies through asexual reproduction.
Using the genetic material from long-established gerbera varieties in Lam Dong and some new varieties imported to Da Lat from countries such as the Netherlands, Japan, and Taiwan, Mr. Tran Pham Anh Tuan has created nearly 3,000 unique strains of gerbera daisies.
Since the beginning of 2006, with this success, Mr. Tuan has supplied over 10,000 new gerbera plants to districts in Da Lat City at a selling price of 4,000 VND per seedling. In contrast, these varieties are exclusively supplied by a foreign company at prices ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 VND per plant.
According to calculations by Da Lat farmers, investing in one hectare of new gerbera seedlings costs around 600 million VND. With a plant life cycle of five years, the total income can reach up to 2 billion VND. The success of propagating gerbera daisies has helped reduce investment costs and increase income for farmers.
