The Nam Dong District Agricultural Extension Station in the mountainous area of Thua Thien-Hue has successfully propagated dwarf bananas using tissue culture methods, overcoming the issue of genetic degradation and contributing to increased productivity on the same cultivated area.

Building on this success, the Nam Dong Agricultural Extension Station is currently nurturing 6,000 seedlings per batch. After more than two months of cultivation, the dwarf bananas are developing well, with each plant selling for only 1,000-1,500 VND. A notable feature of tissue-cultured bananas is the shorter time from planting to harvesting compared to other varieties, allowing for mass harvesting of the entire garden at once and resulting in high yields.
The Nam Dong Agricultural Extension Station has deployed agricultural extension officers to provide technical guidance and distribute seedlings widely to farmers.
Currently, the total area of home gardens in Nam Dong District is 584 hectares, with an average of about 1,200 m2 per household. The main plants cultivated are bananas, areca palms, and some citrus varieties, with average income from garden economics reaching 24 million VND per hectare per year, where 1 hectare of bananas can generate over 50 million VND.
However, some local banana varieties in Nam Dong District have recently shown signs of genetic degradation, pests, and diseases, which have affected the productivity and income of farmers.
The success in propagating dwarf bananas through tissue culture not only ensures a local source of quality, disease-free seedlings but also supports farmers in expanding their banana cultivation to achieve high economic value.
