Snub-nosed Monkey |
The People’s Committee of Ha Giang Province and the Ha Giang Forest Protection Sub-Department have initiated conservation activities, supporting local authorities and residents in protecting the snub-nosed monkey population—a rare and endemic primate species.
The snub-nosed monkey was discovered by scientists in the Du Già Nature Reserve, Ha Giang Province in January 2002, with an estimated population of 50 to 60 individuals.
To raise awareness about the conservation of the snub-nosed monkey among local ethnic communities in the regions where this rare animal is found, the Forest Protection Sub-Department has collaborated with the People’s Committees of the districts and communes to organize awareness campaigns about conservation measures. Over 5,000 households living around the area and within the reserve have been educated about the importance of protecting this primate species. After receiving this knowledge, local residents committed to not hunting, trapping, or using nets to catch the monkeys.
The minority ethnic groups, including the Hmong, Dao, Giay, and Tay people in the three districts where the snub-nosed monkeys are found, have also abandoned shifting cultivation practices, thus preserving the habitat and creating a conducive environment for this rare species to live and thrive.
