VN – Cuba Hospital (Dong Hoi) recently submitted a report to the Quang Binh Provincial People’s Committee regarding two cases of suspected avian influenza fatalities: one patient (female, 14 years old) from Quang Trach District was admitted on October 21 in critical condition and died on October 23; another patient (male, 26 years old) from Bo Trach District was admitted on October 26 and passed away shortly after.
According to the treating physicians, both patients exhibited symptoms including fever, respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, and multiple organ failure. The disease progressed rapidly and presented many symptoms similar to avian influenza.
The family of the patient from Bo Trach District reported that four days before the onset of illness, the patient had purchased pre-prepared goose meat from the market. Meanwhile, the family of the patient from Quang Trach recalled that one week prior to the onset of illness, this patient had consumed a chicken egg. However, based on collected information, the localities of both deceased patients did not report any outbreaks or instances of mass poultry deaths.
