After stomach or intestinal surgery, the functioning of these organs is often paralyzed due to fasting. Chewing gum can help these functions return to normal quickly.

According to American researchers, after stomach or intestinal surgery, consuming high-quality chewing gum can help patients recover quickly and shorten their hospital stay.
In an experiment involving 34 patients, each patient was instructed to chew three sticks of gum per day.
The results showed that patients who were instructed to chew gum were discharged 2.5 days earlier than those who did not chew gum!
After surgery, patients often experience a symptom known as intestinal obstruction due to the paralysis of the intestinal activity from the stomach to the anus. Therefore, “chewing gum is a fundamental solution for the body to form thoughts and stimulate the nerve pathways to the brain and stomach, rapidly increasing the return of these functions,” explained Dr. Kenneth Waxman, a surgeon at Barbara Cottage Hospital and the leader of the aforementioned study.
The idea of using chewing gum after stomach and intestinal surgery originated from a researcher in California.
This treatment is cost-effective and safe. Furthermore, patients enjoy chewing gum as it helps keep their mouths moist!
Dr. Wes Stephen, a gastrointestinal surgeon at McMaster University in Hamilton, described the study as “very interesting and easily accepted.”
However, researchers also indicated that before this therapy can be widely recommended for patients after intestinal and stomach surgery, results need to be verified on a larger number of patients, not just the 34 individuals involved in this study!
